Episode #14: Distractions

Summary: Claude helps Peter deal with his distractions. Claire meets her birth mother. Hiro faces his father and sister. Sylar encounters Mrs. Bennet while continuing his quest for Claire's power. Simone and Isaac speculate about their future. Niki's attempt to control Jessica takes some surprising turns.

Suggested Discussion Topics:

- Claude just takes whatever he wants, stalks whoever he wants and feels no moral obligation about this? How much leeway does being invisible give you? He's in "people's homes. Their bedrooms." He's stealing from them on the streets. WTF? IS THERE harm in that? And... is it different than what Isaac is doing? By trying to paint people specifically to know what they're going to do?
- What was the point (IC) for Jessica to hurt Niki's psychologist?
- HRG has some crazy awesome bullets to make Sylar go flying like that. Thus far Sylar hasn't been rockin' the bullet vibe. Anyone else think he later practiced to be better handling projectiles?
- Simone's wearing the colors Peter wore at the beginning of the season. Neat. Parallels or just costume department thinking she looks good in them?
- What do you think of Meredith Gordon? What do you think of the way she and Claire relate here? And what do you think her former relationship with Nathan was like? Do you feel Claire really wanted answers from her, or was it just the secrecy and instability in her life since the Haitian removed Zach and Lyle's memories?
- Spot the plot hole: Sandra tells Sylar that since Lyle won't be home that night, they'll have an extra plate. But didn't she invite Zach to this dinner already, negating that extra plate?

Suggested Discussion Topics:

- Special anniversary edition question: This episode was the mod's very first one. Assuming yours wasn't the pilot, which one was it? What do you remember about your first episode? And what about this episode do you find memorable?
- Do you find it odd that Niki's in an actual prison (and, in fact, in solitary confinement) when she hasn't had a trial yet? What do you think of how Niki's treated there in general?
- HRG claims Sylar deserves to die for what he did to Eden. As this is the most HRG has ever appeared to care about her, how do you think he really felt about her? What might their relationship have been like in her early days with the Company?
- Also, why does the Company insist on keeping Sylar alive, considering how dangerous he is? Speculate!
- In all seriousness, what do you believe is the reason Hiro thinks that the Godsend sword can restore his powers? Also, what about the conflicting stories about the sword's origin? In this episode, Hiro tells Ando that Takezo Kensei found it in the snow one day, but later on, that's not the story he tells (or the story we see). And, just for fun, how do you think he got the fake sword back into the museum without getting in trouble?

Episode #11: Fallout

Summary: When Matt and Audrey follow up on a lead in the Sylar case, Matt discovers problems with his abilities that he has experienced before. As Peter is held for questioning, he continues to have strange dreams. When Claire tells her father the truth, he reveals he already knew of her abilities, even before she did. Mr. Bennet and his organization imprison Sylar in a maximum protection cell. Hiro and Ando finally meet up with a rehabilitated Isaac. When Jessica's actions threaten Micah, Niki makes a tough decision. Eden decides to take matters into her own hands.

Suggested Discussion Topics:

- What do you think of the Niki-Jessica scenes in this? If Jessica is a part of Niki's mind, why does she have so much hatred for D.L, even disregarding where Micah fits into it?
- HRG speculated that Sylar's alterations to his DNA corrupted his mind. Do you think there's any truth to this? If not, what effect do you think too many alterations might have?
- In Eden and Sylar's scene together, Sylar recognizes her as someone he knows, and Eden tells him from where. What do you think Eden's assignment was, exactly, at that time? Do you think she knew what Sylar was up to? Does it weigh on her conscience now? Is that why she tries to kill him, and failing that, dies so that he can't use her?
- Sylar tells Eden, before she shoots herself, when she has the gun pointed at him, that she knows it won't hurt him. What does this mean? Why won't it hurt him?
- Audrey said law enforcement tends to attract certain perconalities: dogs and bitches. Does she think she has bitchy aspects? What are they?
- MY NAME IS SYLAR- awesome Sylar moment or awesomest Sylar moment?
- Even in Peter's dream, he and Nathan are very, shall we say, Italian. I don't actually have a question here, but I'd like to invite you all to squee with me over that moment.

The earth spins at a thousand miles an hour as we desperately try to keep from being thrown off, like the first blush of winter that signals the great migration. Is there any warning for their arrival? A sign? A single event that set this chain into motion? Was it a whisper in God's ear? Survive. Adapt. Escape. And if we could mark that single moment in time – that first hint of the prophecy of approaching danger… if we had done anything differently, could it have been stopped? Or was the die long ago cast? And if we could go back, alter its course, stop it from happening, would we?

Episode #10: Six Months Ago

Summary: This episode, as indicated by the title, features events that take place six months before the normal Heroes timeline. Chandra Suresh finds and tests a potentially powerful evolved human. Hiro time travels too far, but tries to save Charlie anyway. Claire’s life changes while her father finds out she’s special. Nathan recruits Peter to help him prosecute Mr. Linderman. Niki gets a surprise visit from family. Mr. Bennet gives Eden a chance for a new life. Matt tries to pass the detective test.

Suggested Discussion Topics:

- Gabriel works alone in a black walled room surrounded by loud and out of sync ticking... C'mon! This explains everything. Wait, no. What I meant was... Speculate! Do you agree this explains everything?

- Gabriel's leaving behind a trail of corpses as he escalates into his Sylar persona. Do you think Chandra turned a blind eye to this or genuinely was unaware? Was Sylar right to tell Mohinder his father knew all along what he was doing and choose not to act upon it due to the progress they were making?

- Nathan slow dances with the missus and makes eyes at the brother. Nice. ... Oh, right. In forms of questions. ...Is this Italian or Petrellicest?

- Niki's on the road to recovery and happily married with DL. Was it the reappearance of Hal (Niki's father) that triggered Jessica to manifest or was it always coming?

- Do you think the costume department was mean to Zachary Quinto or really mean?

- Charlie, Chandra and Hal appear (and disappear) in the characters lives suddenly and become driving factors. "A stranger is a friend you haven't yet met" or "Beware of strangers?"

- Do you think Mohinder was in touch much with his father? What do you think his life was like in Madras while Chandra was halfway across the world pursuing comic book heroes and everyone knowing about it?

- Arthur is never seen in this episode, but his relationship to Lindy is frequently mentioned. Do you think Lindy drove Arthur to suicide? He is unable to attend Peter's girlie graduation because of him and later that night, Linderman has his daughter-in-law wheelchaired. OMG SO MEEN or Happenstance?

Episode #9: Homecoming

Summary: Despite Nathan's best efforts to protect him, Peter finds the missing painting he's been looking for. Ando continues to wait for a vanished Hiro. As Jessica plots revenge, Micah convinces D.L. that Niki needs their help. With the help of Sanjog Iyer, Mohinder finds proof of extraordinary powers and chooses his destiny. Peter arrives at Claire's Homecoming, but he's not the only one.

Suggested Discussion Topics:

- Does it seem odd to you that Simone believes in Peter's mission and Isaac's ability? Is this a reaction to her grief over her father's death, or did Charles Deveaux tell her something more specific than she says he dd on his deathbed?
- Do you think Micah is right to manipulate D.L the way he does over Niki-Jessica? And what do you think about D.L as a father and a husband based on his responses?
- What do you think of Peter's scene in the diner with Ando? Are there noticeable parallels between their scene and Hiro's scenes with Nathan?
- How does Sylar keep surviving injuries (e.g, being shot by Matt and Audrey earlier, taking a pretty bad fall in this ep) if he can't regenerate? If he doesn't need the ability, why does he want it so bad?
- Sylar and Eden: is it possible they've met before, in the days when they were both working with/around Chandra Suresh? What do you think that dynamic might've been like? And if they did and Eden had no knowledge at the time of who Sylar was, how do you suppose she feels to find out who he is now?

Episode #8: Seven Minutes to Midnight

Summary: When Mohinder returns to India for his father's funeral, he seems content to stay...until he begins to have unsettling dreams. With Eden's help, Isaac seems to have kicked his heroin habit, but Mr. Bennet's needs jeopardize his efforts. Hiro meets a remarkable waitress named Charlie, but thanks to Sylar he's diverted yet again from his quest. When Matt and Audrey question Ted, Matt begins to discover answers to his own memory lapse.

Suggested Discussion Topics:

- What do you think of the boy who walks in dreams? Do you find the nature of his ability more metaphysical/"magical" than the abilities of the other characters? How do you think he shows Mohinder visions of things Mohinder never saw, such as Chandra's death, if his ability is trictly rooted in the genetic/scientific?
- Mohinder's mother tells him that, from birth, Chandra believed Mohinder's sister Shanti was "special." Do you think this references her having an ability? If so, which one?
- What do you think of the way HRG manipulates Isaac in this episode, and how he emotionally blackmails Eden? Do you feel these things are acceptable under the circumstances, or that HRG is wrong and abusing company resources?
- What do you think of Ted and Matt's relationship and its portrayal here? How quickly they identify and sympathize with one another, how readily Matt defends him, etc.
- What do you think of the FBI's continued interference in Audrey's investigation of Sylar? Why do you think they are so dismissive of the possibility he exists, and so determined to prevent Audrey from making much progress on this particular lead?
- What was your first impression of Charlie? What do you think of her relationship with Hiro?
- Spot the plot hole: If the Haitian never speaks, how do Ted and Matt know that he's from Haiti?

I lost electricity for several hours due to a lightning storm, so sincere apologies for that, guys. :-( To decrease the likelihood of this happening for a third time, I'm now looking for co-moderators to take over the Tuesday and Thursday posts. To do this, you'll need to be familiar with basic HTML, be able to make and resize sceencaps, to locate or write summaries, and to come up with a minimum of five discussion questions per episode. Suggested Discussion Topics:

- What do you think Peter's relationship with Charles Deveaux was like, based on what's shown here? Similarly, what do you think Isaac's relationship with him was like? Why did Simone want to tell Isaac in person of her father's death?
- What does this episode tell you about Lyle Bennet and his relationship with his sister?
- Why, in your opinion, did Janice cheat on Matt?
- What was your first impression of Ted Sprague? Did you believe there was a possibility that he was Sylar the first time you saw this episode?
- Why is Audrey so obsessed with Sylar on such a personal level?
- What about the relationship dynamic between Heidi and Angela Petrelli shown here? How do you think Angela really feels about Heidi? How do you think Heidi really feels about Angela? Where does Nathan fit in between his mother and his wife?
- What do you think Peter's motives were at the breakfast table in the interview with the Dennison? Was he simply trying to manipulate Nathan, or did he smooth over the situation in Vegas out of genuine concern for his sister-in-law and for Nathan's career?
- Of all the people Niki could've called for help (Linderman, the police, her wealthy, if estranged, father, etc.), why do you think she chose Nathan?

Episode #6: Better Halves

Summary: After Peter delivers his message to Hiro, he and Isaac realize there is a missing painting in the "comic panel". Hiro and Ando are roped in by the high roller they cheated. D.L. tells Niki he was framed, and that he can prove it. Claire's meeting with her birth parents doesn't live up to her expectations. When Hiro and Ando get cold feet just in time to avoid a bloodbath, Hiro becomes worried that he has failed as a hero. After D.L. and Niki arrive at the money launderer's place to find everyone torn apart, Niki confesses what happened with Linderman's thugs. When Mohinder prepares to go home to India to scatter his father's ashes, Eden refuses to say goodbye. Niki's alter-ego finally reveals herself.

Suggested Discussion Topics:

- What do you think Peter's experiences with power absorption and messages from the future mean to Isaac?
- Why do you think HRG decides to create this meeting with Claire's "biological parents?" What about the backstory they tell her? Do you think they made it up or HRG did? If HRG did, what do you think he was thinking when he came up with the story? Might it be an allegory or foreshadowing? Is Claire's "birth mother"'s unwillingness to keep her in this story a statement about how Claire isn't as close with Sandra as she is with him, or a way to prepare the audience when her real birth mother doesn't pursue a relationship with her? Was he thinking of himself, of Nathan, or both when he made it her "birth father" that wanted to keep her?
- What about this "chromosonal disease" Sandra says they thought Claire had when she was little? What do you think it might've been? Her powers already starting to manifest, or something else?
- Do you think Hiro is correct when he says this is Ando's heroic journey as well as his own? Why or why not?
- What are/were your first impressions of D.L?
- Why did Jessica manifest for a few seconds to take Micah his backpack? A message to Niki about how quickly and easily she can take over, perhaps? Or something else?
- Eden and Mohinder's kiss: was she just doing her job to keep him around, or did she really have feelings for him?
